INSIDE THE BOOK

About this book

Animation in modern games is more than just moving sprites - it’s about creating believable, dynamic characters and environments. This book dives deep into advanced animation programming, covering skinned rigs, inverse kinematics, ragdoll physics, and procedural animation systems. With practical examples and detailed explanations, it equips developers with the tools to implement complex animation systems that enhance realism and interactivity. Ideal for intermediate to advanced programmers, it bridges the gap between basic animation and cutting-edge techniques used in professional game studios.

A superb guide

A genuinely enjoyable read that also taught me a great deal.

A colleague recommended this and I can see why. It does something that few technical books manage: it respects the reader's time. Some terminology is introduced without much ceremony; I had to look a few things up along the way. I particularly liked the way the author builds up from simple cases before introducing the harder material. The code samples assume a particular environment, which took a bit of fiddling to get running properly. If you have the prerequisites, this is an easy recommendation. I will be keeping it on my desk rather than the shelf.

Worth every page

Excellent from start to finish. No filler, no padding.

I came to this book already familiar with the basics, and it still had plenty to offer. Some of the material is available elsewhere, but rarely presented this clearly. I appreciated the honesty about what the book does not cover — it saved me from expecting things that were not there. I found myself making notes in the margins, which is always a good sign. An easy five stars from me. I look forward to whatever the author writes next.

Exactly what I was looking for

Excellent from start to finish. No filler, no padding.

I read this over a couple of weekends alongside a small side project, which turned out to be the ideal way to approach it. It is denser than the page count suggests, and I found myself slowing down around the middle. Some of the material is available elsewhere, but rarely presented this clearly.
